Optimize Your Food Plot with Bio-Available Minerals

Premium land managers understand the importance of high-quality food plots for supporting deer herds, but many overlook a critical component—macro and micro minerals necessary for optimal antler growth. While plants provide essential nutrients, they don’t supply all the minerals deer need to reach their full genetic potential. That’s where a well-placed mineral site comes in, ensuring deer have access to everything required for overall health and maximum antler development.

One common issue with most “deer minerals” is that they primarily consist of salt. While salt serves as an effective attractant, it does not necessarily provide true nutritional benefits. Many hunters fail to differentiate between attraction and nutrition—just because deer frequent a site does not mean they are getting the minerals their bodies require. The ideal balance includes between 30-40% salt, ensuring both intake and mineral absorption.

Another key factor is bio-availability. If a mineral is only absorbed at 30%, it does little to support antler growth or overall health. Mineral Dirt 180 solves this problem through a process called chelation, which binds proteins to minerals for increased absorption in a deer’s digestive system.

At Ani-Logics Outdoors, we studied liver samples from free-ranging deer across different regions, revealing that even in the most fertile areas, bucks were deficient in crucial micro minerals like zinc, copper, manganese, and selenium. Surprisingly, calcium and phosphorus—often thought to be the most essential minerals—were not the primary deficiencies.

Additionally, Plant testing supports this research. Clover, one of the most popular food plot plants, typically contains only 3-6 parts per million (ppm) of copper, while deer require at least 15 ppm. Without proper supplementation, they may struggle to get the minerals needed for peak health.

By adding a high-quality mineral product such as Mineral Dirt 180 or the Ani-Mineral Block near food plots, hunters and land managers can ensure their deer populations receive vital nutrients, supporting herd health and maximizing antler growth.
